From The Late Kitchen
The kitchen still smelled of last night’s garlic. A clock that had given up ticking watched the table, where crumbs, bills, a dead plant shared a plate like leftovers. She lit the hob anyway. The kettle hissed like a gossip who had been waiting in the hallway. Oil jumped. She cooked as if feeding someone who might still come home, and the dead plant leaned toward the steam as if it, too, had not been told.
